A Study with Christian leaders revealed that support structures like life coaching is essential to staying healthy. I believe that this also applies to overcoming blind spots. Blind spots, by definition, is something that we avoid or cannot see within ourselves that may hinder growth. One of the essential aspects of life coaching is gaining self-awareness which uncovers blind spots.
Keith Webb in his book The COACH Model for Christian Leaders, writes about life coaching as a process that gives new perspective that leads to break through. It can be likened to a companion that walks with you on a country road, while looking out over the countryside trying to find the correct path to take, the companion points out trees and brush that you did not see at first. With this fresh perspective, you notice the opening in the treeline that signals the path you were looking for.
This is what life coaching does, the coach is a companion that, through powerful questions, lets you see situations from a fresh perspective that you did not previously see.
This fresh perspective leads to self-awareness that gives clarity, revealing something that we have taken for granted, neglected, or did not want to accept, in other words, revealing blind spots. Once a blind spot is revealed it can be dealt with in a healthy manner.
“The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing new landscapes but in having new eyes.” Marcel Proust.
Coach U – Provoke fresh perspective.
One way to use life coaching in your own life is to start asking questions that provoke reflection. My Dad likes to say, “What is the story behind the story.”
This simply means, asking questions of others and yourself that are not focused on the surface but on the root motivation.
Root motivations are motivating factors that drive us to do and act in certain ways. The question, what does this give you, will stimulate reflection that leads you to the root motivator. Let’s use an example to illustrate how this question works. What does your job give you? “Money.” What does money give you? “Basic necessities to life.” What do basic necessities of life give you? “A safe environment.” As you continue to ask and answer this question you will end up with the root motivator or something close to it.
A clue, the root motivator will in most cases be linked to a core human need, to be loved and to love. Or in other words, contentment, and fulfillment.
The wonderful thing about discovering root motivators is the realisation of a life direction that is on course or needs re-alignment. If for example, you were doing something out of a selfish root motivator you can now deal with that need to be loved in a healthy way and move away from the blind spot that caused selfish behaviours.
Want to take your self-coaching to the next level? Invite the Holy Spirit into the process. While asking “What does this give me?” Focus your heart and attention on the Holy Spirit and His plans and purposes for your life. Give special attention to the prompting of the Holy Spirit as you reflect on root motivators in your life.
