One of our most important resources

two hands stretching out

In this blog, you will:

  • Discover one of our greatest resources.

  • Get practical insight into viewing life as an ecosystem.

  • Get practical Coach U tips on cultivating this resource.

In our last blog post, we discussed the importance of acknowledging that we do have resources and that God has given us everything we need to make progress with our life goals. In this blog post, we are going to go one step further and discuss one of the most important resources that you have available to you. The resource that I am referring to is your attitude to serving others.

Most of the time when we think about resources, we think in terms of something that can fulfill our ambitions, and in some way that is at the heart of what resources are, but when we consider that we are human beings living within a community of people, a better picture would be an ecosystem that is in harmony with each other to fulfill communal goals. When we consider resources as consumers it can be to our detriment, and toxic for us.

There is an old story about a farmer who had a goose that laid golden eggs. Every day the goose would faithfully lay a golden egg. The farmer however thought to himself, there must be a bunch of golden eggs inside of the goose, “if I kill the goose, I can get all the eggs right now instead of getting one egg per day”. The farmer went ahead with his plan and killed the goose only to find out that the goose was just like any other goose with no golden eggs inside. The moral of the story is about short-sighted greed that destroyed a precious resource. In many cases, our societies have become like the farmer who demands all the golden eggs now without the necessary sense of nurturing each other for sustained mutual benefit.

Our ability to actively pursue serving other people will develop and nurture relationships that will unlock resources within the ecosystem of life. Please don’t misunderstand me, I am not talking about false service to get something, that attitude reveals the heart of the farmer who killed the golden goose. Genuinely cultivating an attitude of serving others, at the bare minimum brings fulfillment, a sense of worth, and engagement with the heart of God. The added benefits of serving others are experience, relationships, and opportunities that money cannot buy. In a way serving others is the resource that unlocks all other resources in life. The Apostle Paul reflecting on his time in Ephesus quoted Jesus in Acts 20:35 like this “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (HCSB)

Coach U

In this week be intentional about looking for three opportunities every day to serve someone else. Next start to take notice of all the places where people serve you, the smile at the checkout counter, the traffic lights directing traffic, someone complimenting you, and the list goes on. You will be amazed at how much we receive and sometimes take for granted. Remember appreciation fuels our service.
