Maintaining Healthy Rhythms of Rest

In this blog post you will learn:

  • About the benefits of active rest

  • How you can maintain healthy rhythms of rest in your work day.

Continuing this week with our series: year-end goals, we will be looking at healthy rhythms of rest. As we approach the end of the year, many people think that to relax and rest, or wind down, is to let go of the activities that have been assisting us throughout the year to reach our goals. I want to propose the opposite and say that these times of irritability and fatigue are the times that we need to be focused on maintaining our rhythms of rest. In this blog post, we will explore how healthy rhythms of rest can sustain and keep us focused on the main things, and prepare us for the moments of break through around the corner.

Rest and Work Routines

According to Alex Soojung-Kim Pang, author of Rest, we should change the way we view rest and the way we practice rest. Soojung-Kim Pang writes that we should not view work and rest as opposites but as two sides of a coin that work together for your benefit. Soojung-Kim Pang found in his research that active rest is better for recovery than lazing about on the couch. Regular walks and exercise can do wonders for mental and physical recovery.

Soojung-Kim Pang also found that highly successful people take breaks after 4-5 hour blocks of focused time to recover before attempting another focused stint. The key is to incorporate bouts of rest in between work hours and not to work for 8-10 hours straight. Now I know what you will be saying, you are not in control of your day and that your work schedule is determined by the company that you work for. With that in mind, I want to challenge you to think about small adjustments you can make to adopt these principles into your daily life. For example, when you go to grab a coffee, instead of checking your phone which provides more stimulation, focus on breathing deeply. Instead of plopping down on the couch after a long day, take a short walk. Employ your creativity to take advantage of active rest.

Based on the above principles, think of ways to maintain healthy rhythms of rest as you wind down after a long year.

Consider, incorporating rest into your day and engaging in active rest activities.
